This term we will be busy learning about the author Roald Dahl, in particular the story of The Enormous Crocodile. The children are keen to get to know about the animals who stop the croc from eating the little children! They will also be learning about Africa, studying the landscape and climate.
The children will be discussing our Christian values of love, respect and perseverance and how we follow the golden rules in order to continue to show good learning behaviour.

Helpers very welcome in class!

If you have 30 minutes or a few hours to help out in class then please talk to Miss Thornton to arrange a time.

Happy holidays to you all...

I wanted to say a massive thank you for all the lovely cards and presents I was given at the end of term. I have now had time to relax and reflect on our wonderful year in Conkers.

Good luck to the old year 2s who will now take off on their journey into Key Stage 2. I will miss you all so much and thoroughly enjoyed the two years of fun that we shared.

Exciting times ahead for our new Year 2s and Year 1s as we embark on another fun year in Conkers class.

Have a great holiday everyone,

Miss Thornton x

We've Got Dragons!

Picture
What an exciting few weeks we have had in Conkers. First the children found a mysterious envelope in the school grounds. We opened the envelope to find a letter written by a female dragon. She asked us to build her a nest by using our maths skills to weigh bundles of sticks. The very next day, 7 large eggs appeared. These eggs were frozen and sparkled in the sunshine. It took a few days for the eggs to melt but when they did we were in for a big surprise - baby dragons!!!!!!
The children have had lots of fun creating dragon stories and performing dragon poems. Year 5 found a secret dragon's den in the conservation area and informed us immediately. Daddy and Mummy dragon wanted the baby dragons returned to teach them how to fly. A week later, during out outdoor learning session, we came across a special present of toy dragons for the class to play with. Just at that very moment we looked up and there were two trails of smoke across the sky!!! WOWEEE!!!  The dragons had been flying around and watching our class.
A truly magnificent few weeks. Who knows what might happen next....

Welcome back - Spring Term Two

Welcome back!
We have had a great week settling back to school life. The children shared their stories about their holiday week, mostly highlighted with their excitement when they celebrated Shrove Tuesday with oodles of pancakes.
Dazzle Day was a great success. The children began their day be being storytellers, retelling the story of 'Jack and the Flum Flum Tree'. We then looked closely at the patchwork sack that Granny gave to Jack and his Crew. The children created their own patchwork design using a variety of colours and patterns. We then moved onto making a patchwork picture using cut out paper shapes. Following this, the children worked with a range of materials, attached them to a big piece of material then practised their sewing skills. They sewed a piece of felt onto another piece of material showing great skill to produce a running stitch. After this the children helped me with the sewing machine to sew the two pieces together. Photos of our finished patchwork sacks will be added to the Art Gallery very soon!
In maths we have been learning how to tell the time. Throughout the day we have stopped and checked the clock to work out the time. Please help your child by encouraging them to try to tell the time on an analogue clock. Talk about the two hands and start with o'clock then move on to half past  then quarter past and quarter to. To challenge your child ask them questions. e.g.

What time will it be in ten minutes?
How many minutes in an hour?
How many minutes until  _____ ?

We have been learning about MATERIALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES in science this week. The children have been finding out about the materials used to make our everyday objects. We have discussed the original state of certain materials and how they can be manufactured to create the things we use in everyday life. We have also carried out investigations observing how some materials change by heating or cooling from solid to liquid and/or gas.

This week’s homework is to access websites and learn more about materials. Please google any questions or try the following links:

This week we have been learning how to create a symmetrical pattern and also find the lines of symmetry  on shapes. Some shapes have many lines of symmetry and some have none. Finding the lines of symmetry on some of the shapes is going to be really tricky so please come in and ask to borrow a little mirror to help.

If you would like a challenge then find a picture of a character or famous person in a magazine, cut it in half, stick it on a page and try to draw the mirror ima
