Teaching Reading and Phonics
Teaching our children to read is, of course, of paramount importance. Here at Great Horwood School, one of the early strategies used to teach children to read is 'phonics'. Children have a daily phonics session. The teachers plan using the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme, supported with the actions from 'Jolly Phonics'. In Conkers class we also learn texts to perform as storytellers and have a wealth of reading materials for the children to access. We have an expectation that parents and carers will read with their child most nights. This can be sharing a book by taking turns, the adult reading to the child or the child reading to the adult, reading a magazine or information text, reading e-books online or why not be a storyteller by retelling a story that you have read....even better, create a new story!
